REVIEW QUOTES
A well written and nicely balanced biography of
a fine and popular cricketer, one absurdly overlooked by the Test selectors.
David Foot, Western Daily Press
It is far more than a simple biography of a
great bowler, tracing, as it does, the story of county cricket from the
mid-1950s to the present day and en route providing some lovely vignettes of the
characters of that time. … Far from the usual hagiography, the chapter which
discusses why he was never picked to play for England is engrossing. … This is
the sort of book to suit cricket lovers who hanker for reminiscences which come
from the heart of the game.
Martin Searby, The Wisden Cricketer
I recommend Born To Bowl. This no-frills
biography chronicles an undersung craftsman, Don Shepherd of Glamorgan, a bowler
of wonderful skill and a man who exudes quality.
Christopher Martin-Jenkins, The Times
Shepherd emerges as a thoroughly decent human being and, as the title says, a truly natural bowler. It comes as no surprise that he not the least bitter about his tag as ‘the best uncapped bowler of all time’. Miller paints a superb picture of Glamorgan cricket and cricketers through good times and bad, and the characters trip off the page.
Miller writes in a lively, free flowing style, with the use of a lot of first hand quotations from Shepherd’s contemporaries (happily he got hold of Jim McConnon just before he died) and can be proud of his book.
Go and buy it and read it for yourself, in fact rush out and buy all Fairfield’s output before they all go. Highly recommended. Well done Miller and Fairfield. Next subject please!
