PETER WALKER
Peter
Walker was born in Bristol in 1936 and grew up in South Africa. As a fine
all-rounder and brilliant close-to-the-wicket catcher, he played cricket for
Glamorgan for many years, being part of the team that won the County
Championship in 1969. He also played three times for England.
During
his cricket career he developed a second string to his bow, following his father
into print journalism. He then became a successful radio and television
broadcaster: first with the BBC, then with Merlin Television, the Cardiff-based
company he co-founded.
In
an action-packed life, he has been a merchant seaman, a crocodile hunter, a
pitch liaison officer, Director of Development for the Cricket Board of Wales
and a tour guide for England supporters visiting overseas Test matches. He has
also found time to recover from colon cancer.
Living in Cardiff, he has been married twice and has three grown-up children. In 2009 he was elected President of Glamorgan County Cricket Club, campaigning on the slogan 'Let's unlock the gates to the unfriendly gulag that is the SWALEC stadium.'
His
previous books are Winning Cricket (1965), Cricket Conversations (1978) and The All-Rounder (1979).
